FROM THE CHAIR                                                                                                   SUMMER 2008

Writing this message to you brings home to me the progress we have made since we purchased the building in February 2006. Our consultants (Headland Design Association) are nearing completion of reports on the Conservation, Access and Audience Plans, which will advise an interim Business Plan. The Trustees are working hard with the help of officers of Lancaster City Council and the North West Development Agency to put together capital funding for the interior restoration. As I informed you in our last Newsletter, the government is making available to coastal resorts £45 million spread over 3 years. We have already sent in our expression of interest and hope to hear if we have been successful soon. Also our application for Heritage Lottery funding will be submitted by the 1st September this year.

Now that the Art Deco Midland Hotel, the other Grade II* listed building on the promenade has reopened, it is giving people in Morecambe a feeling that the regeneration of the town has moved on apace (we are also getting positive press in the national newspapers) and, hopefully, if capital funding is given then the Winter Gardens will not be far behind.

Fundraising is still continuing and since we had a visit from Yvette Fielding and the Most Haunted team we have been inundated with requests from paranormal groups to stay overnight in the theatre for which they are more than happy to pay us a fee per person.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

The Friends are opening the theatre from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday through the summer months. We could always use more volunteers at these times in the theatre, or in the shop which is open Tuesday through to Sunday, 12pm to 4.30pm. If you would like to help in the theatre or the shop you should contact me or any other member of the committee (telephone numbers shown in our Noticeboard on the back page of this Newsletter).

Urban Splash, the company who restored the Midland Hotel, have submitted plans to redevelop the land on the old Bubbles site, and in front on the theatre. It is this that the Friends and Trustees are concerned about. The outline planning application they have submitted indicates a seven storey hotel and a three storey building in front of the Winter Gardens. I have held a meeting with Bill Maynard and Paul Jones from Urban Splash to discuss their plans and register our objection, which they are taking back to their Board. The submitted plans are due to go to the Planning Committee either in September or October but the final day for any objection is the 4th August. These should be sent to the Chief Planning Officer, Palatine Hall, Dalton Square, Lancaster, LA1 1PW or you can also object on line to dcconsultation@lancaster.gov.uk
