I was born in Morecambe, conceived in The Midland and part of "the making" of me can be put down to the existence of the Winter Gardens. My Dad, Billy Two Rivers used to wrestle there; that was painless .The more painful thing was being dragged away from fishing on the Stone Jetty to either be coerced into entering one of Harry Graham’s talent contests at The Bandstand or more worrying still being dressed up like a right little twxt and appear in an amateur production at The Winter Gardens .I didn’t appreciate it at the time but it clearly helped my confidence, my ability to stand up and make my point in public and to appreciate British culture.
Visiting now, I see a wonderful example of seaside architecture that can contribute to a much- needed resurgence in Morecambe’s fortunes. I can imagine diners or wedding guests marvelling at the views across the Bay to The Lake District from the upstairs galleries.
Let’s not sell Morecambe’s " Crown Jewels" and let’s make sure those views are not compromised by thoughtless development across the road.
I can imagine a new generation of creative people using the magnificent theatre.
I am proud to be a patron.
